Sal
Tedesco, A Brief Biography
Sal Tedesco, with
a little help from his friends kept the idea of Castro Valley Incorporation
alive for the past 17 years. Sal is a staunch supporter of the idea
that local government is better government.
Sal grew up in San
Francisco's North Beach.
Korean War veteran
and graduate of UC Berkeley in Pol. Sci. At graduate level
interned with the League of Calif. Cities.
Assistant City Manager
and subsequently City Manager of Santa Cruz, CA from 1956 to 1962.
Served as a staff
representative for the Peace Corps in Africa for over two years from 1962
to 1965 (Ghana, Somalia, setting up new programs in East Africa.)
Returned to work
in the Poverty Program, Wash. D.C. with the Men's Urban Centers Division
from 1965 to 1967.
Transferred to the
Department of HUD and assisted in developing the federal "Model Cities"
program; 1967 to 1969.
Returned to California
while with HUD and assigned to the San Francisco Regional Office as a senior
urban grants manager to cities and counties and as a chief underwriter
for multi-family housing in northern California; 1969 to 1985. Retired
from federal service to pursue other interests such as continuing studies
at university and to assist spouse in operating her travel business.
Have lived in Castro
Valley for 33 years with wife, Sylvia and two sons, John and Greg (both
graduates of local schools). Have served both as a member and as
chairman of the Castro Valley Municipal Advisory Council, chaired the CV
Downtown Specific Plan Development Committee, served on past study groups
investigating the feasibility of incorporation. Have been active
in the CV Chamber of Commerce as a member of the Planning and
Zoning Advisory
Committee. Also served on the County Grand Jury for two years and
on the County Advisory Commission on Aging. For several years on boards
of Eden Housing.
Sal Tedesco,
a long time supporter of cityhood for Castro Valley has publicly stated
he has no desire to be City Manager and no plans to run for City Council
in the interests of getting the vote passed successfully.
